Your title, description and social card in one look
Three things decide whether someone clicks your result or your shared link: the title, the meta description, and the social preview card. This meta tag checker reads all three off a live URL so you can see exactly what searchers and social feeds see — truncation included. Want to tune the search snippet specifically? The SERP preview tool is the sibling that renders the Google result block.
What are meta tags?
Meta tags are lines of HTML in your page <head> that describe the page to search engines and browsers. Two carry the weight for SEO:
- Title tag —
<title>Your headline</title>. The clickable blue headline in search results and the label on a browser tab. Lead with the keyword and write it like a promise. - Meta description —
<meta name="description" content="…">. The snippet under the title. Google may rewrite it, but a sharp one still earns clicks.
This tool also reads your canonical link, which tells Google the one true URL for a page so duplicate versions don't split your ranking.
What is Open Graph?
Open Graph is a markup standard — originally from Facebook — that controls how your link looks when it gets shared. Paste a URL into LinkedIn, Slack, iMessage or Facebook and the title-description-image card that pops up was built from your Open Graph tags. No Open Graph, no preview. The three that matter:
og:title— the card headline (can differ from your SEO title).og:description— the card text.og:image— the preview image, ideally 1200×630. A missingog:imageis the number-one reason a shared link looks broken.
One thing people miss: Twitter/X reads its own twitter: tags but falls back to your Open Graph tags when those are absent. Get OG right and you cover most platforms at once. If you only need to confirm the card renders — a quick open graph debugger pass — the preview above does it without touching anything else.
Title and meta description length
Google truncates in the snippet, so length is a hard constraint, not a suggestion:
- Title — keep it under ~60 characters. Past that, Google cuts it with a
…and your message ends mid-word. Strictly it's a pixel limit (~580px), so wide capitals truncate earlier than narrow text. - Meta description — keep it under ~155 characters. Front-load the value so it survives the cut.
This tool flags both before Google shows a chopped-off title to ten thousand searchers. To watch the truncation render live as you edit the copy, jump to the SERP preview tool.
vs the Facebook Sharing Debugger
People reach for Facebook's Sharing Debugger when all they want is a quick OG check — but it makes you sign in, and clearing its cached preview means re-scraping the URL until it updates. This is the no-login version: it reads your tags and renders the card right here, no account, no cache-refresh dance. Use it for a fast sanity check before you ship. (The official Sharing Debugger is still the place to flush Facebook's cache across its own surfaces — different job.)
