What is llms.txt (and why it's not robots.txt)

llms.txt is a small Markdown file you put at the root of your site (yourdomain.com/llms.txt) that hands large language models a clean brief on what your site is and where the good stuff lives. A heading with your name, a one-line summary, then curated sections of links. That's the whole idea. The spec lives at llmstxt.org, and our llms.txt guide covers how to create one and whether it actually helps.

The most common confusion: people assume it's robots.txt for AI. It isn't. robots.txt controls access: it tells crawlers what they may and may not fetch. llms.txt lists your key pages for the AI tools and agents that read it, and it has no say over crawling. They solve different problems and live happily side by side. If you want to control whether AI bots can reach you at all, that's a robots.txt job: run your file through the AI-bot access checker instead.

Where it stands in 2026

Let's be honest about where this stands. llms.txt is a proposed format. Google Search does not use llms.txt: Google says the file neither helps nor harms visibility or rankings in Search, including its AI features. Support among other AI vendors is limited and unconfirmed. So why offer a generator? Some AI tools and agents can read the file, and a curated index of your key pages is tidy documentation that takes minutes to write. Publish one if the tools you care about read it. Treat it as optional documentation work; your visibility in search still comes from well-structured, indexed content.

How to use this generator

1. Fill in your site info: name and a one-paragraph summary of what you do. The fields above are prefilled with a real example you can edit or clear.
2. Add sections: group your most important pages (Docs, Services, Blog, Pricing) and drop in the links that matter. A section with a title but no link is skipped, so add at least one URL per section.
3. Copy or download: the output updates live. Hit Copy, or Download llms.txt directly.
4. Upload it to your root: put the file at /llms.txt so it loads at yourdomain.com/llms.txt, then open that URL to confirm it serves.

Where to put it & does it help SEO

Placement is non-negotiable: the root, same level as robots.txt, served at /llms.txt. Not a subfolder, not a meta tag. As for SEO impact, the straight answer is none in Google Search: Search ignores llms.txt, and treating it as a ranking lever will waste your time.
